30 Days to Growing in Your Faith- Review
I
read and reviewed Max Anders' book ‘30 Days to Understanding the Bible’ a few years
ago. I was intrigued by the idea of committing 15 minutes a day to learn the Scriptures. The greater appeal of this book is the discussion
of well-tried practical applications of the Bible. The proposals are well-phrased,
the directions are plain, and the text is clear and simple.
Anders’
premise is "If something is important to you it has to be repeated till it
changes you." This process of repetition is an essential part of his
approach. I did not expect the scope of his directives. It seems that every
aspect of spiritual growth finds its way onto the pages of this book. The
exposition on Mental Renewal was especially challenging. Even in the more familiar
areas of growth, there are unique insights.
The
author claims it is crucial that believers live with an eternal perspective. (Chapter
2) In this context Christians must recall evidences for God’s existence, which are
readily apparent, and not always argue about proofs. "When you leave the
laboratory where you were looking for proof, and go to the courtroom looking
for evidence, the ground shifts dramatically." Well-said.
I
was at first skeptical of the last chapter on Humanitarianism. Some debates on this topic deteriorate
quickly. It is not usually addressed in
these kinds of books. I found the section to be helpful.
The
book will appeal to new believers, just getting started in the Christian walk. Bible teachers will appreciate the chapter
reviews with blanks that allow for memory stretching. Mature believers and
pastors may benefit from the fresh expressions of well-known principles.
